Job Summary

The Associate General Counsel and Director of Advocacy Initiatives serves as legal counsel to ACC on a wide variety of legal issues, including supporting ACC’s corporate governance. Lead ACC’s advocacy efforts on core issues of concern to the in-house counsel profession (attorney-client privilege for in-house counsel, gatekeeper liability and multi-jurisdictional practice) and the advancement of the chief legal officer as a critical member of the c-suite.  A partial list of duties and responsibilities include:

• Direct ACC advocacy initiatives pertaining to the role and position of the chief legal officer: attorney-client privilege for in-house counsel, gatekeeper liability and multi-jurisdictional practice and ACC’s Seat at the Table.
• Lead ACC advocacy efforts by promoting ACC initiatives through amicus curiae briefs, comment letters, in-person presentations, convening of coalitions of like-minded organizations and other similar activities.
• Monitor advocacy issues globally and work with OGC team and the Advocacy Committee to develop ACC’s advocacy strategy.
• Serve as legal counsel to ACC as a member of the Office of General Counsel. In addition to handling a wide variety of legal matters on behalf of ACC, incumbent should take the lead in a particular area of legal practice, such as intellectual property, technology agreements, and credentialing, by gaining expertise in that area, both on the job and via other educational opportunities, such as certifications.
• Maintain and update ACC’s governance framework, coordinate ACC Board/Board Committee meetings, and take minutes of ACC Board/Board Committee meetings, and other governance tasks as directed the VP & Chief Legal Officer.
• Timely prepare any substantive briefing materials for the ACC Board/Board Committee meetings as required by the VP & Chief Legal Officer. Position will have act as staff liaison to the ACC Board of Director’s Advocacy Committee.

What we need from you

• Juris Doctor (JD) required
• Minimum of 10 years of experience
• Understand the unique nature of in-house practice and issues confronting the global business community.
• Demonstrated writing expertise: Ability to write clearly and persuasively.  Samples of articles, amicus briefs, comments, or other legal documents will be requested.
• Excellent strategic, organizational, and prioritizing skills
• Project Management: Understands and applies principles of estimating, budgeting and work scheduling when managing projects. Understands expected outcomes and inspects work of others to ensure results match expectations before accepting work as final. Successfully communicates and interacts with members representing other functions within the organization
• Technology: Effectively uses Internet and/or computer technology and demonstrates comfort with technological tools and concepts. Demonstrates familiarity with products, services, and online resources in the legal area. Position will include the requirements to update webpages.  Knowledge of Drupal, HTML or other webpage service a plus.
• Incumbent is expected to perform by assuming significant responsibility, having a strong sense of initiative, working with a high degree of independence, and making important and well thought out decisions and successfully directing significant courses of action on behalf of ACC with minimal supervision.  Incumbent must demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to get along with diverse constituencies and personalities, including the Board, members, staff, and contacts at external organizations.
