The American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) in Arlington, VA, a professional scientific society, is recruiting a Communications Manager. The Communications Manager oversees the strategic development and production of all of AAPS’ stakeholder communications. The primary objective of this role is to position AAPS as a premier scientific society with a recognizable, well-regarded, credible brand. This is accomplished through close relationships with publications and other media operating in the pharmaceutical market. The Manager will work with the AAPS senior management team on the development of a portfolio-based media and communications approach that includes supporting the goals of the Business Development Team and revenue generation in managing relationships and contracts with vendors, collaborators, media contacts, and the editors and writers at pharmaceutical-related trade publications.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Build and maintain an overarching, portfolio-based, media and communications strategy for AAPS that covers trade press and other media outlets as appropriate, including placing articles, coordinating interviews, developing contracts, etc.
- Develop and maintain a professional network in the pharmaceutical media and communications space to widen AAPS’ access to current media and communications trends in the industry.
- Develop communications plans and materials for the Business Development Team in support of AAPS’ partnering and external relations activities, positioning the association as a high value collaborative partner and thought leader in the field.
- Work with the Executive Director on messaging and external affairs communications, including press releases and media interactions.
- Keep abreast of key developments in the pharmaceutical space that affect the society’s visibility and positioning approach.
- Work with the AAPS Newsmagazine Content Manager and the Editorial Content Committee to grow the visibility, readership, and value of the AAPS Newsmagazine as the associations’ digital news and information platform, and as a cornerstone of the association’s voice.
- Support the logistics of the Scientific Advisory Committee and assist in developing AAPS’ scientific focus.
- Ensure the alignment between the areas of member products and corporate engagement to assure that communications and messaging platforms are aligned across the organization.
- Stay abreast of strategic communications, external visibility, and brand recognition decisions for the organization as developed and communicated by senior management and volunteer leadership.
- Develop strategic communication and AAPS positioning ideas and approaches with Executive Director and senior management, and assists in implementing them throughout the organization’s communications and especially in its external communications
Qualifications
- Must have experience in external affairs and media relations in a scientific not-for-profit, volunteer-supported organization.
- Must have a working knowledge of trade publications, especially their editorial development processes.
- Must demonstrate writing, editing, proofreading, and oral communication skills.
- Experience with the pharmaceutical or healthcare field a plus.
- Experience with business negotiation a plus.
- Experience working with volunteers to accomplish specific goals preferred.
- Excellent project management skills.
- Solid experience in MS Word, MS Excel, and other office-related and publications-specific software.
Education and/or Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, or STEM-related field required, or demonstrated extensive, related work experience.
- Experience in trade publications or working with them strongly preferred.
- Experience with scientific, technical, or medical (STM) research.
Physical Demands
Majority of work is performed on a personal computer sitting at a desk for long periods of time throughout the day. May be expected to lift boxes up to 25 pounds. Travel to AAPS conferences as required. Evening and weekend work required, particularly during annual busy season. Ability to remain professional in stressful and crisis situations is critical.
Work Environment
Work is performed within a fast-paced high volume, detail-oriented environment. Travel is required. Remote work, telework and flexible schedule offered.
