The 150,000-member American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) seeks a self-motivated and organized person with excellent writing and communications skills, an interest in infrastructure policy issues, and an understanding of the media landscape to join our Washington, DC external affairs team.
The Manager, Media Relations helps continue to strengthen the reputation of ASCE and its civil engineer members by executing strategic communications plans to raise the profile of civil engineers and ASCE priority issues, tracking news trends and coverage, developing media materials such as media advisories, news releases, media lists, and talking points, and preparing ASCE national and local leaders to serve as effective spokespeople in print and broadcast media, as well as press conferences.
The Manager for Media Relations is responsible for working with local ASCE members on media relations activities and to foster greater participation of local members and Branches in the Society’s national external relations program. The ideal candidate will be passionate about promoting the civil engineering profession, innovation and investment in infrastructure, and the Infrastructure Report Card.
The Manager will also help with a variety of tasks including:
Drafting news releases, media advisories, and official press statements that promote the Society and its initiatives
Building robust and up-to-date media lists and pitching stories to the media
Drafting and compiling content for newsletters, blog, and website
Managing social media content and implementing creative messaging to build social media following, in addition to tracking trending content on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn
Supporting and managing media events and report releases, particularly related to ASCE’s most high-profile publication, the 2021 Report Card for America’s Infrastructure and state infrastructure report cards
Tracking media coverage for ASCE, including compiling daily report of press clips for distribution to staff and leadership every morning
Fielding media calls from reporters and coordinating with subject matter experts as appropriate
Preparing spokespeople for interviews, including developing messaging and writing talking points based on ASCE policies and technical reports
Providing media training through our Public Relations University program to members as requested.
Managing ASCE’s Excellence in Journalism Award program
The successful candidate will have:
Bachelor’s degree in public relations, public administration, communications, journalism, or another related field
1-3 years of experience in media relations or strategic communications
Proficiency in MS Office, Adobe Pro, and media monitoring tools
Effective time management with demonstrated success supporting multiple responsibilities and deadlines
Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills
Sound discretion and poise under pressure
Experience in a public affairs firm, an association or infrastructure-related industry (preferred)
