The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE)—a global not-for-profit and membership association—is recruiting for a Director of Development reporting to the Interim Vice President for Strategic Partnerships.

As CASE approaches its fiftieth anniversary, the Reimagining CASE strategic plan has generated a number of significant and dynamic initiatives in support of members worldwide. Headquartered in Washington DC, CASE maintains offices in London, Singapore, and Mexico City, and is well known for the deep sense of loyalty amongst the 90,000 professionals working in over 3,600 member institutions in 82 countries.  All the professions we represent under the banner of integrated advancement—development, alumni relations, marketing, communications, and advancement services—have a shared commitment to advancing education to transform lives and society. 

Position Purpose

The Director of Development develops, manages, and sustains a comprehensive and robust development program for the association. The director will work with the CASE President and CEO, Board leaders, and Vice President for Strategic Partnerships to engage individuals, foundations, corporations, NGO’s, and others who share a vision to act as a catalyst to advance education worldwide and to inspire, challenge, and equip communities of professionals to act effectively to champion the success of their institutions.

The core functions of this position include but are not limited to the following:

Program/Project Management

1. Manage global development program. Work with the vice president of strategic partnerships to craft and implement a sophisticated, multi-year, international fundraising strategy that will result in sustainable, long-term growth in philanthropic contributions and enduring relationships with donors. Systematically engage, solicit, and steward current and new donors, targeting those who share the goals and values CASE projects as a worldwide brand. Help grow philanthropic income to agreed targets on an annual basis by setting clearly defined and measurable goals. Maintain communication and strong working relationships with the executive directors and appropriate staff in the Washington, D.C., London, Singapore, and Mexico City offices.

2. Identify and pursue grant and funding opportunities. Work with the vice president of strategic partnerships and CASE’s senior staff to identify corporations and foundations that might provide additional philanthropic support to the organization. In conjunction with the vice president, develop and write grant and funding proposals. Conduct annual appeals to various stakeholders. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of potential donors. Work with Accounting and other CASE staff and partners to track grant spending and comply with any required annual reporting on usage of grant funds.

3. Support CASE leadership on fundraising opportunities. Advise and support the President and CEO, Board leaders, Vice President for Strategic Partnerships, and other senior volunteers/staff worldwide in activities that support the philanthropic goals of CASE.

4. Oversee Planned Giving Program. Manage and promote CASE’s planned giving program, including the cultivation of new donors interested in considering a planned gift through their will or estate plan.

5. Steward existing donors. Develop and implement strategies to effectively steward current donors to CASE with the goal of ensuring long-term, enduring relationships. This includes frequent outreach, engagement, and communication with existing donors and ongoing maintenance of donor records, files, and agreements. Work with Volunteer and Member Engagement staff to steward donors to various scholarship programs.

6. Plan and direct marketing and communications to donors. Collaborate with CASE marketing staff to develop and distribute effective communications vehicles related to development, including materials to market and position CASE opportunities for potential donors. Write and edit proposals. Plan and help develop marketing materials to recruit new donors. Maintain and update the giving to CASE section of the CASE website.

7. Staff CASE’s Development Advisory Group. In conjunction with CASE senior staff, plan and manage meetings to ensure that this advisory group is engaged in activities that are rewarding to its members and add value to CASE. Plan and carry out outreach between meetings and manage the processes for recruiting new advisory group members and officers.

8. Build a culture of philanthropy within CASE globally. Since CASE seeks to fundraise globally, work with colleagues in all offices to build the associations philanthropic culture. Help foster an appreciation for philanthropy and giving back to the association among CASE volunteers and staff worldwide.

Fiscal Management/Budget Responsibilities/Judicious Use of Resources

1. Develop and gain approval for a budget for this position’s area of responsibility and execute that budget.

2. Maintain CASE charitable solicitation status in all regions, including collaboration with Accounting to ensure the annual filings.

3. Exercise fiscal responsibility in the utilization of all CASE resources.

Liaison Responsibilities

1. Exhibit appropriate leadership toward and work cooperatively and supportively with all volunteer groups for which this position is responsible.

2. Interact with senior-level leaders of CASE (staff and volunteer) to develop strategies and carry out programs that build philanthropic support for CASE.

3. Work with the Gift Acceptance Committee, which is responsible for implementing the gift guidelines for accepting and administering philanthropic gifts to CASE.

4. Participate in committees, task forces, and other groups that increase knowledge of CASE’s development program.

5. Participate in cross-department strategies to determine organizational funding priorities and develop appropriate strategies to respond.

6. Collaborate with CASE colleagues in all parts of the world to ensure the best sharing of effective practices.
