Scientific evidence informs many of the issues that society is grappling with today, from climate change to drug addiction and recovery, and from decision-making by autonomous vehicles to the development of new therapies for cancer. Annual Reviews, founded in 1932, has been described as “the most compact, accessible, and usable archive of the intellectual history of the sciences and social sciences in the world … a milestone of human intellectual achievement”. Our products capture the knowledge and wisdom of the world’s foremost researchers across 51 fields of science.
Currently, access to Annual Reviews is largely restricted to the research community. The organization is seeking an outstanding Director of Development to raise the funds required for the transfer of this crucially important information to everyone that could benefit from the most accurate and thorough scientific analysis.
Developing a deep understanding of Annual Reviews mission and vision and building a culture of philanthropy among our staff, Board and Editorial Committee members.
Working with our Board, the President, CFO and management team to lead the development and implementation of a fundraising strategy that includes foundation grants, corporate donations and individual gifts.
Developing a donor cultivation plan based on prospect research, knowledge of the scholarly community, relationships among internal and external stakeholder groups, and the use of data to inform decision making.
Developing and maintaining a donor database, tracking and analyzing donor data to identify prospects, and cultivating donor relationships.
Encouraging the involvement of Board members in fundraising efforts by engaging, informing and supporting Board members with information and materials, and providing guidance on best practices to assist them in interacting with individual prospects.
Developing fundraising materials that reflect our brand, tell compelling stories and connect with donors’ interests.
Developing cultivation, solicitation and stewardship programs for major donors and managing and executing preparation of proposals to individuals, foundations, and corporations.
Building and maintaining long-term relationships with prospective donors and representing Annual Reviews at relevant public activities.
Measuring success of fundraising initiatives, including reporting metrics, managing budgets and ensuring that goals are met.
A genuine interest in and a passionate commitment to the mission and vision of Annual Reviews, a demonstrated enthusiasm for science and disseminating scientific knowledge, and the ability to articulate this to potential donors
BA/BS and 5+ years of experience planning, executing and managing fundraising/development efforts, including managing key foundation, corporate and individual donor relationships
A proven track record of identifying, cultivating, personally soliciting and securing foundation, corporate and individual grants, building a portfolio of donors, significantly increasing donations, and obtaining single gifts, pledges and grants over $1M or more
Proven success in meeting goals, strong knowledge of fundraising best practices, a passion for fundraising and the ability to develop a new fundraising program
Previous grant writing experience
Exceptional verbal communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to establish strong rapport with donors, our Board, Editorial Committee members and staff, build trust, work collaboratively, maintain positive and productive long-term relationships, inspire confidence, and demonstrate cultural competence
Engaging public speaking and presentation skills and excellent writing skills with the ability to create and deliver clear, persuasive and compelling communications
High integrity, excellent judgment and the ability to demonstrate optimism, resiliency and adaptability
High level of initiative, resourcefulness and productivity with strong organizational and project management skills, exceptional attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills
Proficiency using fundraising donor databases, experience with data analytics and marketing, and strong knowledge of Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
Experience effectively managing a budget and tracking and reporting on outcomes
Willingness and ability to travel 20-30% of time and to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed
Prior experience with volunteer leadership and committees strongly preferred
Ability to articulate a compelling case for the support of open access a plus
