ASM is increasing its organizational commitment in public policy and advocacy activities with the goal of becoming highly visible and more effective in this space. The Federal Affairs Specialist will work with the Director of Federal Affairs to influence public policy at the federal level to advance the microbial sciences across all areas, but with a particular focus on agricultural, energy, and environmental legislation and public policy. This position will also interact with the ASM members and other organizations to advance the interests of ASM and its members. The position requires working collaboratively with internal departments, in particular, the Communications and Membership departments, to gather input from and communicate to stakeholders--including members, organizational partners, and media--about policy and advocacy efforts.
Proactively identifies opportunities for ASM federal policy engagement
Monitors, analyzes and reports on legislative and regulatory activity that has the potential to affect the microbial sciences community in assigned policy areas
Provides timely updates on policy issues for staff and volunteers.
Works with ASM members to develop position statements, testimony, and regulatory comments.
Assists with Capitol Hill-focused activities such as advocacy days and congressional briefings.
Ensures a strong presence on Capitol Hill and with the Executive Branch
Represents ASM in coalitions with whom the Society is engaged and identifies new partnership opportunities
Collaborates effectively with diverse stakeholders and partners working to address issues that impact the microbial sciences
Work directly with volunteer committees and volunteer leaders
Demonstrated success building relationships with government agencies, legislative bodies, coalitions and other policymaking entities and designing and implementing advocacy campaigns; strong connections with key policymakers preferred
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to craft compelling messages for ASM member audiences and policymakers, including communicating with non-scientific audiences
Excellent policy analysis skills and the ability to use data/evidence to shape policy and advocacy messages.
Good decision-making and organizational skills
Passion for addressing issues that impact the microbial sciences community
Ability to work under pressure and in a fast-moving environment, with demonstrated success in working under tight deadlines and with competing priorities
Ability to work in a collaborative environment, but also independently when necessary
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in science or public policy preferred
5+ years with a professional, scientific, or trade association policy and advocacy activity
Knowledge of the life sciences, research and the relationship to policy issues, including federal appropriations;
Experience working with volunteer leaders a plus
