The National Potato Council (NPC) has an immediate opening for a Manager of Communications and Public Relations. NPC is a small but highly visible association whose mission is to stand up for U.S. potatoes on Capitol Hill. NPC is located three blocks from the McPherson Square Metro station.
NPC’s Manager of Communications and Public Relations is responsible for creating and implementing internal and external communications and outreach strategies for the association representing the $4 billion potato industry’s federal and international interests. Key responsibilities include the creating and dissemination of all web, electronic and print communications to membership, industry partners and media designed to educate and promote the public policy initiatives of association events and the potato industry. The Manager also works with team members on communications for the Potato Expo, the largest annual potato industry conference and trade show in North America, as well as other association meetings. Candidate will be part of a close-knit team that values collaboration.
Manager, Communications and Public Relations responsibilities include:
Collaborates with public policy team members on writing and editing of collateral material for legislative and regulatory initiatives and grassroots activities.
Assists in the development and editing of public policy statements and policy position papers.
Assists in the drafting and editing of letters, comments and testimony on key issues.
Directs outreach activities, including managing production, editing and dissemination of information through NPC’s weekly e-newsletter.
Assists in management and execution of the association’s podcast.
Manages relationships and partnerships with trade publications other media sources.
Writes monthly columns and press releases for trade and national press.
Maintains editorial calendar.
Develops issues briefs, presentations and materials for distribution at NPC meetings.
Assists in managing the Potato Political Action Committee, including fundraising, events, contributions and filings.
Assists in identifying messaging and content for ag-vocacy video series.
Maintains and updates websites.
Coordinates association booth at annual convention, including design, messaging and materials.
Manages social media platforms.
Assists with marketing of annual convention including print, website, social media and e-marketing.
Produces annual Potato Statistical Yearbook.
Maintains membership database.
Collaborates on development of promotional brochures, marketing materials and other printed materials for all meetings and assist with delivery.
Assists in production of on-site materials and promotional materials for annual convention.
Provides administrative support for office.
Bachelor’s degree with three to five years of experience in communications, preferably with an association and/or experience in the agricultural industry.
Experience managing member communications, including newsletters, grassroots activities, event marketing, social media and meeting materials.
Experience working with trade and public media.
Demonstrated experience effectively leading social media campaigns.
Superior writing, editing and presentation skills. High attention to detail.
Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, while ensuring deadlines are met.
Strong customer service, project management, organizational and analytical skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact professionally and effectively with all levels of staff and members and be customer-focused.
Proficient in MS Office and social media platforms.
Positive and friendly, and willingness to take on new responsibilities.
Some travel required.
Reports to Director, Member Outreach & Programs.
Works directly with other staff members, including the CEO, COO and Vice President of Industry Relations & Events.
Maintains and develops relationships with members, industry partners and media.
