The Greater Houston Dental Society, an approximately 1800 member dentists’ professional organization serving the Greater Houston area, is searching for an Executive Director for our more than 100-year-old organization. GHDS exists as a component of the Texas Dental Association and the American Dental Association. The ideal candidate has their CAE certification or is within a year of achieving their certification. They would have the experience to lead a four-person staff to continue building on the vision of “helping members succeed”. Working within this structure and utilizing its benefits will help to fulfill the strategic plan that drives the main objectives of our society: membership, advocacy, comradery and continuing education. GHDS works under a volunteer Board structure with various councils and committees consisting of member dentists. This includes working within the Texas Dental Association’s House of Delegates structure and coordinating and sending a delegation to the TDA House of Delegates each year. Management of the central office of GHDS includes facilitating the day to day operations and staff with an annual budget of approximately $1.3 million. The central office, approximately 3,750 sf of leased space in 1 Greenway Plaza, is inside the 610 loop in Houston Texas. The ED position is a full-time, exempt role and from time to time includes evenings, weekends, and extended hours as needed to accommodate Society activities such as board meetings and representing the organization at outside events. Periodic travel is required to attend state and national conferences and meetings.
Serve as executive director and carry out the duties, including the making of necessary decisions, normally performed by such an officer.
Make decisions within existing policies that have been approved by the Board.
Plan, organize, direct and coordinate staff programs and activities to assure that objectives are attained, plans fulfilled, and members’ needs met.
Recommend and act as a resource person in the formulation of new policies.
Serve as a communication liaison among the elected and appointed member officials, the staff, and the membership.
Conduct business on a sound legal and financial basis, including controlling expenditures in compliance with Board approved budgets.
Keep officers and directors informed on all GHDS matters that will assist them in carrying out their responsibilities under the Bylaws.
Obtain maximum utilization of staff by clearly defining their duties, establishing performance standards, conducting performance reviews and maintaining a competitive salary structure based on budgets adopted by the Board.
Plan, formulate and recommend for approval of the Board basic and innovative programs which will further the objectives of the GHDS.
Negotiate and execute such contracts and commitments as may be necessary for the efficient and fiscally responsible operation of the Central Office or as may be authorized by the Board.
Prepare preliminary budgets for study and review by the Budget Committee before presentation to the Board.
Execute oversight and management of all accounting/finance and HR functions.
Provide the Board with comprehensive, regular financial and executive reports.
Under supervision of the Board and the Treasurer, ensure that all funds, physical assets and other property of the GHDS are appropriately safeguarded and administered.

Certified as a Certified Association Executive (CAE) or within a year of certification.
At least 3 years of experience successfully leading and managing a team of staff members.
Experience working at a senior staff level with volunteer Boards, preferably in a healthcare setting.
Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration or similar preferred;
Knowledge of association business, with experience in areas such as membership, meeting planning, journal and electronic publications, and advocacy.
Knowledge of and proficient in and financial management, including budgeting, business oversight, audit processes, and investment tracking.
Adequate technological knowledge with the ability to manage an IT infrastructure in conjunction with outside resources.
Skilled in negotiations, building alliances and working in collaboration with dental partners, business entities, members and staff.
