The American Society for Microbiology (ASM), headquartered in Washington, DC, is seeking a full-time Advocacy Specialist. Based in Washington, DC, ASM is part of one of science’s most exciting fields. ASM is looking for a bright, enthusiastic, energetic individual who is looking for a great opportunity. The incumbent will work with the Director of Public Policy and Advocacy to identify grassroots advocacy opportunities throughout the US, including coordination with related federal advocacy efforts. The Specialist’s primary focus is on educating, engaging and activating ASM members to serve as effective and consistent advocates in support of microbial science and biomedical research.

• Bachelor’s degree required, policy-based graduate degree a plus • Minimum 2-3 years of professional experience in policy or grassroots advocacy setting. • Familiarity/experience with federal science policy and/or the grassroots advocacy work of a non-profit or association • Experience working within health or scientific disciplines, knowledge of the federal appropriations process, and time spent with a professional society or other non-profit organization are strong pluses. • Proven ability to set priorities • Ability to manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines • Excellent written and oral communicator, critical thinker and writer • Proficient in MS Office platform • Strong project management and research skills • Ability to multi-task and work with supervisor to adjust priorities in a flexible manner to address changing needs • Strong research skills
