Executive Vice President for Development U.S. Naval Institute Annapolis, Maryland Reports to: Chief Executive Officer Department: Naval Institute Foundation Staff reporting to the position: Individual Gifts Director, Corporate Gifts Director, others Position classification: Exempt, full-time Summary The U.S. Naval Institute (USNI) seeks a development leader of presence and confidence who can passionately represent its mission, vision, and values to donors and prospects, and work with them systematically to secure the institution’s immediate and long-term funding requirements. The Executive Vice President (EVP) will report to the Chief Executive Officer and become an integral member of his senior leadership team. He or she … - Will take responsibility for the planning, design, implementation, and management of a comprehensive development program embracing individual, corporate, and foundation support across all categories: unrestricted, project, endowment, and planned gifts
- Will develop and manage relationships with high-capacity individual donors, in order to raise substantial funds for USNI
- Will lead all work to develop major partnerships with corporations
- Will be capable of planning, preparing and executing a major, comprehensive campaign
- Will manage development staff and work with the entire organization to develop a structural capacity and mindset that encourages more and more people of means to see USNI as a great place for advancing their philanthropic goals.
Responsibilities The EVP will … Formulate, then direct and oversee the management and implementation of, a USNI master development plan; establishing and communicating immediate and long-term goals and strategy Manage relationships with significant donors, including individuals and families, corporations, and philanthropic foundations, with the goal of increasing their generosity and their ongoing sense of USNI as a sound investment Orchestrate and support the CEO, board members, and other leadership volunteers Continuously grow the pipeline of future major donors Develop cultivation and stewardship plans for companies, foundations, and individuals Lead a team of development professionals who are accountable for annual fundraising goals; work with them to develop philanthropic marketing materials and products Build and maintain systems that generate accurate reports to the CEO and board regarding progress against fundraising goals; ensure seamless interaction with financial reporting system Qualifications - Successful track record developing and meeting goals, especially acquiring significant gifts from high-net-worth individuals and the business sector
- Substantial experience engaging senior leadership teams, managing staff, and developing and working with boards and high-level volunteers; 10 + years of senior responsibility
- Strong balance of strategic thinking, management skills, and pragmatic execution
- Deep experience with military and national security funders
- Authentic passion for USNI’s mission
- Superb oral and written communications skills effective across a variety of constituencies, including donors, the public, senior management, and board members
- Ability to travel as much as 50 percent of the time
- Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred
