Manages, writes, and edits content for the monthly ITE Journal, bi-weekly Spotlite e-newsletter, and quarterly Transportation Professional Certification Board e-newsletter. Supports additional communications vehicles such as ITE social media channels and ITE Community. Manages ITE Podcast program.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
ITE Journal:Develops and maintains the ITE Journal editorial calendar with the ITE Communications and Media Senior Director, incorporating input from the Executive Director and International President.
Manage and assure adherence to the monthly editorial/content and production schedule. Work with communications and media senior director, marketing senior director, design firm, and printer to ensure timely production.
Solicits content from ITE members, transportation stakeholders, public agencies, private firms, and industry and non-industry partners, working with authors on all aspects of article development. Confirm and process all unsolicited manuscripts to include peer review, cloud-based software administration, and correspondence with authors.
Work with authors, reviewers, and ITE senior and technical staff to ensure editorial quality.
Writes original feature articles based upon research, interviews with ITE members and industry leaders, and content from ITE conferences. Writes and edits monthly columns for ITE Journal, such as People in the Profession, Inside ITE, Inside Industry, and Member Profiles. Assists with President’s Message and manages Op/Ed and Letter to the Editor submissions.
Coordinates content across all ITE divisions. Confirms information with Membership staff for awards, obituaries, and member announcements. Develops articles that complement ITE webinars, training, projects, contracts, and council/committee news with the Professional Development Associate and Technical staff.
Directs ITE Journal design and layout with the ITE Communications and Media Senior Director working with a graphic design firm. Incorporates Executive Director input for monthly cover designs and other areas as needed. Participates in full proof editing process, adhering to the ITE style guide.
General Communications: Contributes to the bi-weekly ITE Spotlite newsletter, providing Industry News and writing blurbs as needed. Contributes to the daily e-newsletters at the ITE Annual Meetings, covering technical session and event highlights. Develops and distributes Annual Business Meeting Report for electronic release in conjunction with the Annual Meeting and Exhibit.
Manages logistics of the ITE Talks Transportation Podcast program, to include identifying, inviting, and scheduling podcast speakers with input from the Executive Director, Associate Executive Director, and International President; developing questions working with technical staff; and uploading and distributing one episode each month.
Writes the quarterly Transportation Professional Certification Newsletter.
Provides writing and editing assistance on association projects as needed.
BA/BS in English, Journalism, Communications, or related field with a focus on technical writing and editing. Master’s degree preferred but not required.
Minimum 5 years’ experience writing and editing, preferably for association publications.
Experience preparing and distributing electronic newsletters through email services such as Constant Contact, Bronto, and Mail Chimp. Experience conducting interviews, both written and recorded.
Internet experience to include managing content on websites, social media platforms, RSS feeds, and blogs. Familiarity with app versions of communication tools preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Outlook. Familiarity with Adobe Suite.
Demonstrated independent ability to produce a wide-range of written content that includes, but is not limited to, journal articles, newsletters, speeches, and presentations, for a wide variety of audiences.
Ability to translate technical information and jargon into plain English. Ability to develop and write original feature articles based upon extensive research.
Ability as a writer with demonstrated use of proper grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and consistent adherence to style guide rules. Ability to develop and maintain a house style guide, coordinating with staff. Ability to serve as editorial resource to all staff producing written content.
Ability to edit technical documents and coordinate article development with both internal and external authors.
Excellent interpersonal and public speaking skills. Must work well with all levels to interact with city, state, and federal officials; company presidents and CEOs; association leaders, Board of Direction members, volunteers, and staff; vendors, technicians, and researchers; and the general public in order to solicit and develop article content.
Knowledge of publication design and layout process to collaborate with graphic designers.
Excellent organizational abilities to set and meet deadlines; must be adaptable, detail-oriented, creative, and self-motivated. Ability to handle and maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information.
